Helio Gracie vs Masahiko Kimura
The Legendary Fight
Introducing our newest BJJ gi, the "Judo vs BJJ"! This commemorative gi honours the legendary fight between Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu founder Helio Gracie and No. 1 Judoka Masahiko Kimura.
Crafted with premium Japanese cotton, this gi is a tribute to the sport's most famous throw-downs. With over 200,000 spectators in attendance, this historic event was the first time a jiu-jitsu championship was fought outside of Japan.
The Fight
The fight took place on October 23, 1951, at the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Gracie challenged Kimura to a grappling match for world bragging rights and to prove that his new Brazilian art was superior to the Japanese art of Judo, from which BJJ was spawned.
Kimura was so confident of victory that he told the newspapers that if Helio could last for three minutes, he should be declared the winner!
Kimura threw Helio around like a rag doll, but struggled to control or submit him, known for his defence. Midway through the second round, Kimura caught Helio with a shoulder lock that later became known as the "Kimura".
